I founded the award-winning multi-racial greeting card and gift company Colorblind Cards in 2007, and we made history as the first company to secure a presence for a black card range in the UK high street in 2008. I had been on a mission to find a card featuring a black princess for my then seven year old daughter Monet, and inspired by the high-street’s lack of black or brown super-heroes and princesses, Color blind Cards was born. Within six months we were stocked in 100 branches of Clinton Cards, numerous independents, Moonpig.com and secured distribution in the US, Barbados, South Africa and Bermuda.
My passion for the success of Color blind Cards has always had more to do with the social importance of a high-street and media which is representative of our community than just selling birthday cards. I want my children and all children, to have access to positive images which reflect their identity and nurture a sense of self love and pride in their identity, and if we can contribute to that reality through our range then we have achieved what I set out to do.
My vision for Color blind was to create an inspiring range which could be enjoyed by everybody – regardless of their ethnicity but catering particularly to a black and mixed-race audience who had been previously over looked by the greeting card industry.
Several business awards later and we have broken some ground, but there is still much to do in spreading our simple message of unity and the fact that the only thing that should be separated by colour is laundry. We hope you enjoy the range as much as we continue to enjoy expanding it!
